Programs
This office co-operates
with universities and co-ordinates programs in religious education
for people in the diocese. Information about the following programs
can be obtained by contacting the person for the specific program
listed below.
Theology
Courses
The University of St.
Michael's College, Faculty of Theology, offers programs leading
to a Diploma in Theological Studies, a Diploma in Religious Education
and a Master in Religious Education degree through the off-campus
site, named Niagara Satellite. Teachers and chaplains of the Niagara
Catholic District School Board who are accepted into the Niagara
Satellite program are eligible for a Jubilee scholarship sponsored
by the Diocese of St. Catharines and the school board.

Brock
Pre-Service Course
Brock University offers
a 40-hour program in religious education to candidates in the Faculty
of Education who wish to teach in Catholic schools. This course
builds on the commitment of the student teacher to his/her faith
and helps prepare the new teacher to effectively pass on the faith
to the pupils. The program, while not mandatory, is highly valued
by Catholic school boards. Faculty of Education candidates may

OECTA
(Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association)
The Niagara Catholic District
School Board and the St. Catharines Diocese sponsors OECTA courses,
Part I, Part II and Part III, for teachers in religious education.
Candidates may take one or all of the courses which ultimately
lead to a specialist certificate in religious education, which
is recognized for additional qualifications toward grid placement.
These courses are offered in the summer and one part during the
year. Teachers may inquire about these courses, their duration,

Distance
Education
St. Francis Xavier University
in Nova Scotia offers a Distance Education Program for Catholics
wishing to take courses in religious education. If you are interested,

The Office of Religious
Education (905-684-0154) provides a spiritual advisor and facilitator
who meets regularly at the diocesan Catholic Centre with those
enrolled in the program.
